Burning Man MEGAPOST
Burning Man pictures have come back from the lab! Which is great, because I've found it so hard to describe without visuals. Now you get them :D This picspam takes you through the bug-splattered-windshield days of our drive West, right on through to the end.

Walnut, Iowa. Population 891. Makers of great pies.

Emily: "Baroo?" No, not that Evanston. Evanston, Wyoming.

I am Queen of the Big Pile of Dirt. Which isn't quite as good as King of the Mountain, but it's getting there.

Pilot's Peak, which John and I agreed should be in the dictionary under "mountain." It's about 30 miles away from where this picture was taken.

See John. See John drive. Drive, John, drive!

See Emily drive. See sun glare in Emily's eyes. Glare, sun, glare!

The sign at Empire, one of the last towns before you hit Black Rock City.

All pictures from here on out are at Burning Man!

Our neighbors, who came in a school bus, had brought a huge spin-art machine they'd made themselves. John's helping them get it off the roof of the bus.

For those who haven't heard, The Man got burned the first night, and not by accident. Someone was trying to make a statement. However, the event organizers were able to build a new one by Thursday.

Green Eggs and Ham breakfast at Whoville:

Life-sized Settlers of Catan!

Dig the zerba-corn.

^ At the Faery Formal.

Have you accepted Kitty as your personal savior?

A communal mural. My eensie contribution is that green bunny with "B A HPY BNY" under it. Later this got partially covered and only read "B BNY." XD

BATTLE OF 10,000 LIGHTSABERS. Well, probably more like 1,000. But still, that's a thousand people whaling on each other with plastic lightsabers. This happened on Thursday night, and we'd been looking forward to it since Monday night when we'd heard about it for the first time.

The best part was afterward, when we stormed and took over Center Camp, where they just happened to be playing some incredibly rockin' music as we charged in with our sabers and started battling each other... Thus startling all the people who were trying to nap/have a relaxing coffee in there. Ooops! ^___^;;

Jedi masters:

Some steampunk cookies puttin on a show.

Now this? Is a bird's-eye view of someone on bungee cords about to be launched into battle in the Thunderdome, which was, yes, a huge dome that you could climb on. And watch people on bungee cords whale on each other with big foam bats.

The totally-punked-out referee at the Thunderdome signals for the fight to begin.

This is an art/party-car I hopped on one night on the rare occasion that John and spent some time apart. This took me aaaaallll the way to the other end of the playa and back.

John with his hand covered in oobleck.

Me with oobleck on my shoe, almost flashing the camera. Oooops!

Those winds can be brutal. Or was it an RV?

Home sweet tent.

The Steampunk Treehouse!

Inside the treehouse:

U-ME, the Unfortunate Monkey Experience. This was an interactive "game" that only took one person at a time, but it was worth the wait. All Communist peoples rejoice! *giggle*

This is a guy swinging a girl on the treehouse tire.

Me in the tire! ^____^

Playing Settlers in a dust storm.

Victory!

I love the guy on the "camel."

The Critical Tits bike ride.
Just after which, a MAJOR dust storm hit:

Jumping for joy under a double rainbow. Not that I'm complaining in the slightest, but what IS it with the double rainbows this year? This is the third one I've seen.

At a reading of "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" at Whoville. Look reeeeeeeaaal close at the drawing of the King...

I am the Dancing Queen! For reals.

SWEENGS! (and waffles):

The Temple:

Our Burning Man family :)

The Man burns!

Emily and John on the Neverwas Haul:

I love this picture to bits and tiny pieces. Smeeeesh.

The Temple burns:

Our bug- and dust-encrusted rental car.

The empty spot where our campsite was.

One last picture before we hop in the car. Believe it or not, I have a tan.

Yays!

For those who haven't heard, The Man got burned the first night, and not by accident. Someone was trying to make a statement. However, the event organizers were able to build a new one by Thursday.
Oh, I'm so glad. Someone posted a bulletin on their myspace quoting some hate-filled articlette about Burning Man, gloating at how the event got messed up cause of the sabotage. I messaged the person that I knew someone who went to Burning Man, and their source was totally off about it. Honestly. So I'm doubly glad it didn't make the smallest dent in your fun. <3

It's not surprising, but most burners seem to be inclined toward at least mild histrionics. "Everything's ruined, it was SO much better last year/5 years ago/my first year, boohoo." :P

Hehehe, I think that's true of groups of people everywhere. I have yet to see any sort of large group/organization/club/whatever that doesn't have a bunch of people who - when they run out of even semi-legitimate complaints - complain about nothing at all. x_x

But, you're extra-cool and groovy and chill, with the whole optimism thing. Thumbs up!! :D

It looks like you had such a fantastic time of exploration and fantasy!! Some of the pictures- especially the one near the beginning of you sitting on the car near the dunes- remind me of snapshots that you show your children for years to come- I hope you print some of these and don't just relegate them to pixel life.

I've heard a lot of negative stuff this year about the festival, especially about the dead guy that people thought was performance art (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=3&entry_id=19890)...

it's really nice to hear (and see!) what a good time was had there too.

it looks like you and john are really happy
all the best

The pictures were taken with disposables, so they're already in print form. I just ordered a picture CD along with the prints :)

Yeeeaah. Luckily for us we only heard about the suicide instead of witnessing it... Poor guy. Poor people who ran that camp, too!

...I have NO IDEA what Burning Man is, which is sad, because it looks AWESOME.

Also, in this here photo:

...not having any idea what that thing on the right should be if it were clearer, it kinda looks like Neville. As in, Harry Potter Neville. Doing DeviantArt stock photo poses. Bwahahaha.

This looks SO cool.

Wow. That looks... amazing. I'd heard of Burning Man before but never knew anyone who went and never really understood what it was. After piecing together the web site and your pictures, I think this is just an awesome idea. So inspiring! Thanks for sharing them =) *really tempted to go one year*
