So on Monday, they sprung the surprise news on us that the one and only Alan Rickman would be paying us a visit for a Q&A session the next day. And lo, July 17th shall henceforth be known as Alan Rickman Day.

Anyway, out of all the things he said, aside from all the stuff about actual, y'know, acting, one quote keeps coming back to mind:

'We'll all find out on Friday or Saturday what the hell I'm up to.'

Oh yes, Mr Rickman. Yes we will.

Going out tonight with my Hufflepuff tie and scarf to Waterstone's where I've reserved my copy. Cornmarket Street is going to be a MADHOUSE because there are at least 4 bookshops within a block of each other, and they're ALL having midnight release parties. So we are gonna party like the Twins.

A final word, and I have not been privvy to any spoilers whatever, so this is pure speculation: If it so happens that Harry has to die in order to save everything, so be it. But. If JK Rowling kills any of the Weasleys- especially Ron, Fred or George- I am going to fucking burn... not the book. But something.

Oh, plays. You might just be my saving grace.

Aaaaaaaaaaandayup, I finally got around to reading Golden Compass (I think the first person to go "omgz you must read this book" to me was, er..... 10 years ago? o_O). And I must say: damn. I knew it had a powerful religous theme going into it, but still: day-yum. That shit is painful. Ow.

Also, Lee Scoresby is WHEEE. And Sam Elliott is thanking his lucky stars for that role; it's practically written for him.

I must say I did a double-take when within, oh, the first sentence? the book mentioned Oxford. Musta been fate that I waited this long. ;)

That book made me tear up a remarkable number of times. ;_; All of Carey's characters are so remarkably human, even the ones who aren't (eheh).

As for my own writing--I finally filled in the missing bits of the first chapter of my novel, finishing it. 4071 words (out of a total 5830) that I feel truly proud of. If it takes that long to complete a draft that I can feel equal pride in, so be it. (though I kind of hope it doesn't... ^__^;;)

I am SO behind on this. O_O

Example of how BSG is an amazing show: After seeing everything that's happened since the beginning, to re-experience the mini-series (either watching or in this case, reading) and see in these characters the despair and disbelief at what's happening around them, is to shake your head and say, "You have NO idea..."

Went to the Waa-Mu cast/crew party tonight, after heping Bruce with his film-class project (I was a vampire! and totally got to embrace/devour intorporeal. Had a couple of Smirnofs, played never-0have-I-ever, engaged in pleasant conversation. Gooooooooooooooooooood times. Hadn't had anything to eat in ling enough to justify all these typos after two drinks ^__^;;;

Emily S said I might be "the new her" next year. I would definitely not mind being the new her at all, especially since she did costumes AND was in the show.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck, I am exhausted. Got up this morning at 9, went and flew on a plane back to Evanston, met John & went walkin' around, watched a movie-- then John left, I practiced a bit for Musical Theatre, sat down at the comp and suddenly I feel like I've been hit by a train. Owwwww.

(speaking of people getting hit by large moving vehicles, DAY WATCH TRAILER ZOMG. looks a lot more spectacular than its predecessor, and I mean 'spectacular' in its literal definition)

I should really be unpacking.

Also, GAH. I may have the costume concept for my DCP char next year. Although it's almost exactly like Mary's was, except black. XD What can I say, I dig the long-jacket-and-vest look. And next year's character must needs look kickass and beautiful, cause she is. Will be. Whatevs.

6)) American Gods, Neil Gaiman

I think Neil Gaiman should be counted as a genre in himself. All his stories are so similar, conceptually. He's a real wordsmith, which is what makes the story interesting to read over again.

On the other hand, I think it was Andrew Lippa who said that if you write enough, you eventually find out you're writing the same story over and over again. Maybe it's just that Gaiman's personal story is easier to discern.

I feel like I could write a whole story based in these principles now. I find it fascinating. In one way I'd hate to have to live under all those rules, but in another it's nice how everything was structured around the consideration for others' feelings.
Then again, the highest form of etiquette these days requires just about the same thing, but do we follow it?
I'm trying to figure out why that last thought makes me happy. Somehow the reassurance that people have always been the same gives me comfort.
The rules are only defined by how we break them.

Tony Kushner kinda owns my soul as far as contemporary plays go. I lovelovelove his stuff. And Dawn says I'd be good at it (I guess we'll find out next year; that's when we "do" him).

I still have to make sure I know my stuff for Japanese, write up summaries of interviews, write a short response to the Credeaux Canvas reading... But all that's gonna be squeezed in the cracks of free time between class tomorrow.

Thursdays are definitely my days of crazy this quarter.

I spent a lot of time dreaming today. Dunno what else I can say about it but that, so I'll leave it.
